Focus and Scope

Access to published articles
SMAI-JCM publishes research articles on the design and analysis of algorithms for computing the numerical solution of mathematical problems arising in applications.  Such mathematical problems may be continuous or discrete, deterministic or stochastic, and relevant applications span the sciences, social sciences, engineering, and technology.  Papers should address the design and implementation of algorithms, assessment and analysis of errors and uncertainty, and/or computational issues associated to the their implementation.
Papers for SMAI JCM should present a substantial advance in the design, application, and/or analysis of a significant computational methodology or approach, and a progress in our understanding of them. Computational results should usually be included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques and/or their interest for applications.


In particular, SMAI-JCM welcomes articles addressing:

  • Computational linear and nonlinear algebra
  • Numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations
  • Discrete and continuous optimization and control
  • Computational geometry and topology
  • Image and signal processing
  • Processing of large data sets
  • Numerical aspects of probability and statistics; assessment of uncertainties in computational simulations
  • Computational issues arising in the simulation of physical or biological phenomenon, engineering, the social sciences or other applications
  • Computational issues arising from new computer technologies

Peer Review Process

The refereeing process follows the traditional conventions, based on peer and anonymous reviewing. The process follows the following steps

  • The Author submits a manuscript. Manuscript are submitted on-line through the submission page. Neither hard-copy submissions nor direct submissions to members of the Editorial Board are accepted.
  • If the paper is considered appropriate for the journal, the Editor-in-Chief assigns an Editor-in-Charge for the manuscript.
  • The Editor-in-Charge selects Referees.
  • The Referees review the manuscript and send reports. We should do our best to keep reasonable delays for this evaluation step.
  • The Editor-in-Charge makes a recommendation to the Editorial Board.
  • The Editorial Board finalize a decision and the author is contacted.

It is vital to the reputation of the journal that conflicts of interest be avoided. Therefore, it is our policy that editors not review papers authored by their close friends, colleagues, co-workers, students, or recent former students. The same policy applies to referees: editors should not send papers to referees who work at an author's institution or who are known to have close ties to the author. To help avoid conflicts of interest, editors who are assigned manuscripts that present a conflict of interest decline the assignment and the paper will be reassigned to another editor.

As far as possible in all communications with authors, we wish to avoid wording that could make the status of the paper seem unclear. In particular, when an author is asked to revise a paper, there is no guarantee that the revised paper will be accepted for publication. Usually, in fact, such revised papers must again be refereed.

The Editor in chief may reroute a paper from an editor to another, either when an editor cannot handle a paper due to heavy workload or any other consideration, and requests the rerouting, or when an editor has not handle a paper in a timely and responsible fashion.

Authorial integrity

SMAI, the supports of the journal and the editors are highly concerned by authorial integrity. Plagiarism and duplicate publication are definitely considered as misconduct.

Any paper that would correspond to such a case of misconduct will be removed form the journal, and the case will be reported on the website through a formal notice that states the facts about the source of the work and provides the appropriate citations to that work.

Editorial Board

Editors-in-Chief are appointed by the Management Board of SMAI with the guidance of the Scientific Board.

Editors are appointed by the Management Board of SMAI on a proposal from the Editors-in-Chief.Editors-in-Chief and Editors serve a term of 4 years.

Papers authored by Editorial Board members

Papers authored by Editorial Board members are subject to the same anonymous peer review process as other papers. Submissions to the journal authored by an Editor-in-Chief will be treated either by the Vice-President of SMAI in charge of publications, or by another Editor-in-Chief with a blind process that remain anonymous.

Review Guidelines

Referees are invited to submit the report either as an attached file, ordirectly in a text box, where a plain text or a TeX code can be pasted. If you select the first option be sure that there is no identifying information in your attached file.  PDF files frequently contain identifying metadata.

It is very important to provide useful infomation that helps in making the decision. In particular the referee is invited to suggest one of the following decisions, including a justification as to why the decision was arrived at:

  • Reject outright;
  • Return to the author for major revisions, outlined in report;
  • Publish or reject depending on the current needs of the journal;
  • Publish after minor revisions, outlined in report;
  • Publish as is.

If the paper is considered, both in substance and presentation, as worthy for publication, a ranking evaluation will be highly appreciated, for instance according to the following table:

  • Exceptional (in the top 5% of the papers recently evaluated in a similar field)
  • Excellent (in the top 10%)
  • Fair (in the top 50%)
  • Poor

Technical hints for Reviewers

1. When the Editor selects you to review a new submission, you receive e-mail notification. Usually, this notice does not include the manuscript for review as an attachment, but the manuscript can be viewed by clicking the link in the e-mail notification. The notice specifies the due date for submitting the review. Both the Editors and the authors will appreciate your efforts to review in due time.

2. You are invited to access the review page by clicking the link to log in as a “Reviewer”.

3. Under Review Steps, click the envelope icon next to “Will do the review” at Step 1. Tip: You will not be able to complete subsequent steps until you have clicked the “Will do the review” icon.

4. Click on the page icon labeled “Review” under Step 4 and enter your comments to the author and the editor in the pop-up window. (Note that comments entered in the “to editor” box will not be forwarded to authors; comments in the “to author and editor” are not immediately accessible to authors, but are in most cases forwarded in their entirety to authors by the editor.) Click “Save.” When finished, click “Close.” Tip: An oddity in OJS is that once you’ve entered your comments in the box, you must first click the “Save” button and then click the “Close” button to successfully submit your review.

5.  Step 5 gives you the option of uploading files (for example, if you prefer to upload the document containing your review feedback rather than copy-and-paste these comments into the box at Step 4). Click on “Browse” to locate the review file on your computer, and click “Upload” to submit the file. Tip: It is not sufficient to choose the file and save and continue. You must also click “Upload” to upload the submission.

6. Finally, select a recommendation for the submission from the drop down list, which contains the following options:

  • Accept Submission
  • Revisions Required (“conditional accept”)
  • Resubmit for Review (“revise and resubmit”)
  • Resubmit Elsewhere
  • Decline Submission
  • See comments

Warning! After taking this decision, you will not be able to enter comments, to upload a report file, or to modify the decision. Send your review feedback and recommendation to the editor by clicking “Submit Review to Editor”. This feedback goes to the Editorial Board only; it is not provided directly to the author.

If your review of a manuscript has not been received by the due date, you will receive a reminder. Please inform journal staff immediately if you are unable to undertake the review of a submission for any reason, so that another reviewer can be assigned.

Journal History

SMAI-JCM is a publication of the French Mathematical Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics. It is supported by Insmi, a CNRS research institute.

It is published under the principles "Free for Readers, Free for Authors" (FFR/FFA).
